This entry is part 1 of 2 in the series Vintage Movie Posters and Signage

There seems to be an increasing interest in Original and Vintage Movie Posters. Some of them are priceless since they never printed a lot of them. These posters used to travel from one movie house to another all over a particular State. These days, a Near Mint poster can command a pretty high price.

I love Movie Posters the same way I do Antiques Signs. Today, I am sharing my list of links with you. I am not interested in buying any of these posters, at least not in the immediate future. So, I really do not care about authenticity. To me a copy is just as good as the original since I am not a collector. just a wannabe connoisseur.

My goal is to study these posters, know the artists behind them; learn the styles, the trends, the printing methods used, etc. I want to find out why I love those posters so much. As a layout buff, I want to learn how these artists managed to possess such a command of layout, typography, color and balance.

We are fortunate to be able to browse through these priceless collections, from the comfort of our home. The Computer Industry, Libraries, Auctions Sites, Online Merchants, Private Collectors, Curators, etc, played an important part in this beautiful endeavor.

I am researching the subject for my own enjoyment and to help people like myself find valuable available resources. I will be merely pointing out the features and qualities that would be of interest to the advanced researcher and web surfer.

More sites will be added as I progress in my search. Please, Bookmark this page, as there will be more links to other invaluable sources of Vintage Movie Posters and Prints.

You are invited to check the following site first:

They deserve their slogan: “The ultimate resource for vintage posters” Their site is the best I have seen so far, in the areas of web navigation, ease of use, and inventory. They do not have a “see larger picture” feature. What they have is a good size thumbnail showing enough detail about the chosen piece. And next to the picture there is a wealth of information. There is an advanced search engine where you can pick studio, language version, film’s country, artist, title, actor, director, size or decade. For the knowledgeable researcher, this site is an open-pit gold mine.

My second choice is:

http://www.moviegoods.com/
A tremendous collection with tons of prints of movies posters in different versions and languages. They also have an affiliate program. Still, one of the best features of the site is its educational value. You can learn a lot about the history, collecting, authenticity, preservation, of Movie Posters and other related subjects. It is a good place to start, for someone doing research.

http://www.allposters.com/
This is my third choice; they primarily sell prints, but they have one of the nicest collections of posters. Very neat interface, well organized site.*

And the list goes on…

http://www.filmposters.com/
Vintage only, no reproductions. Good size inventory. Very nice*

http://movieposters.ha.com/
This seems like a serious auction site. If you are into Posters and Auctions, this may be the place for you.*

http://www.movieposter.com
Mix of rare and expensive vintage posters, and lots of affordable reprints.*

C.W. Post Library. They boast 6000 movie posters, mostly from the 40s and 50s, but only the top 100 can be viewed online. Eventually I will go and browse through their collection in person, since I live in the area. Libraries are always good source of information.

This site has a decent size collection of vintage posters with a lot of foreign items: French, Spanish, Danish, Polish, etc, but they don’t have a thumbnail based search. If you know exactly what you want or don’t mind clicking, you might find some gems.

http://www.rainfall.com/posters/Movie/catalog1.htm

Another nice site with decent viewing capabilities, but they mostly sell prints. Lots of different types of posters.

If you find a similar site that could be of value to Poster lovers like me, please, let us know. Thank you.
